I promised an update on my progress learning German, so here we are! Learning German is tough. I’m still on the struggle bus. I was hoping it would go a bit quicker than it is, but time will pay off (I hope). Glad I can share a bit on how difficult it is to learn to speak German. I do see some small progress, but let’s get into the breakdown of if it’s working.
From mid-May to June, I took a language class through my grad school’s Modern Language Center and it was great. It went really…really..fast. So I did feel like I was doing a bit of catch-up, but it got better over the progression of the class. I’m looking forward to finishing the next section of the class in a few months when it starts back up again because it’ll be good for long-term learning, and give me something new to do in London.
Babbel really has helped on this journey. I found many gaps in my learning from the class, but it was easy to fill those with Babbel lessons. While I don’t really understand the grammar too well still, I am learning vocabulary and how to put together sentences. I guess the rest will come with time.
Regardless, I learned a lot! Many words about jobs, how to actually use the articles with specific words. I learned a surprising amount about moving and apartments, which will come in handy soon. I also learned about verb placement, which is still super confusing.
I’m failing a lot. I still get a lot of the articles wrong, but I do know how to convert them. Sometimes, I can’t tell when to switch verb tenses yet because everything still sounds or reads exactly the same. I have a long way to go in terms of learning.
I am still interested in learning! While the road won’t be easy, but I’ll put the time in. I’m also hoping that when I’m around my boyfriend a bit more, he’ll actually speak to me in German. Maybe. We shall see.
Well, this is my German update! I’ve really enjoyed learning the language and I’m going to keep at it! This is my last update til I move, so be sure to subscribe below to get the next update as soon as it comes out!
